Finding the right hairstyle for my face

How to use your hairstyle to your best advantage
by Doris Möller

When you do your hair you do it because you need to cleanse your hair and to look nice. But your hairstyle can and should do much more for you than that. The right kind of hairstyle has the ability to make your face look more symmetrical. A symmetrical face is the most pleasing to look at compared to an asymmetrical long, round or square face. Although very few people have perfectly proportioned features, you can use your hairstyle to its fullest advantage to help you achieve a perfect look.

Always keep in mind that your hairstyle is a major contributor to your attractiveness. Remember the saying: "Your hair style can make you or break you." Research now shows that a person's first impression is based largely on the hair style or "hair impression" that a person makes. It is hard to believe that your hairstyle could be so powerful. Being attractive is empowering. Research has established that attractive people are more popular and successful. These are all important reasons for paying attention to having the right hairstyle. (And hair color).

The shape of your face is your guide to finding the right hairstyle. First look at yourself critically in the mirror. Our faces are either too long, too round, too square and even if it is a perfectly oval the hairline might be too high or too low. Your hairstyle can either compensate those imperfections or accentuate them. The right hairstyle can give a more symmetrical look. Let's look at what you need to know to choose the right hairstyle.

Here are a few guidelines:

A round/square face
Don't: Have your hair flat on top, wide on the sides and heavy bangs.
Do: Add some volume on top of your head. You can also have a layered cut with hair falling in your face on the sides. If you hair is long you will not be able to have height on top. The weight of the hair will make it flat. Chin length, layered hair is fine.
You can have wispy bangs, not full bangs because they will make your face rounder.
Part your hair off-center.
For Highlights: Highlight your hair only on the top and leave the sides and the back darker. This will make your face look more symmetrical.

A long face
Don't: Have long, straight or very short hair. Both styles will elongate your face.
Do: The length of your hair should not be much longer than chin length. It should be layered to give it fullness and softness, with some hair falling on your forehead or full bangs. Have little volume on top, but volume on the sides.
For Highlights: Have highlights all over your head, but not lighter on top.

A pronounced nose:
The back of your head should have volume.

A small short nose:
Not much volume in the back of your head.

A long neck:
Don't cut your hair too short. Highlights around the neck area are recommended.

A very short neck:
Wear your hair short. No highlights in the neck area.

Very wide forehead:
Part hair off-center and let it cover some of your forehead.

If you are tall:
Hair style should be full and not too short to avoid making you look taller and out of proportion. Highlights all over.

If you are short:
Hair style should be short to avoid making you look shorter and out of proportion. It's important to balance your hairstyle with your body. No highlights on the sides or neck.
