Hair Coloring Advice

For people who go to a hair colorist and for those who do their own hair coloring at home

 By Doris Möller
Many people believe that they can’t perm their hair if it is colored. Yes you can have a perm even if your hair is colored. Make sure that you use a perm lotion for colored hair.

Can you perm hair that is streaked (highlighted)? Yes. Use a perm lotion for colored hair and if you have more streaked hair than virgin hair, use a perm lotion for bleached hair.

How can you best prevent your hair color from fading? The best way is to keep your hair in the best condition possible. How can you do that? Hair conditioners are mostly cosmetic and once your hair is in bad condition a hair conditioner can only make your hair easier to work with, not restore it. When you color your hair (with permanent hair color) only apply the color on the re-growth. Don’t put the color through on the rest of the hair. Not even for the last ten minutes of processing time. Using this technique has two major advantages. One is that by not applying hair color on the part of your hair that has already been colored, you avoid drying it out and therefore keep it in good condition. The second advantage is that this technique makes hair colors look more natural and adds the most natural looking highlights. (If you have spent weeks on the beach your color will have faded too much and you will have to bring the color through the ends).

When coloring your hair at home are you afraid that the color you have applied might get too dark? Do you wash it off before the required processing time has elapsed? It is not a good idea to wash your color off before the required time because you are interrupting the coloring process which means that you didn’t give it enough time to deposit all the color pigments. What you get is a hair color that is half finished. You need never worry about your hair color getting too dark because the color of your hair will never go darker than the color you have chosen. For instance, if you have decided to use a light brown shade you never have to worry that it will become black. You could leave your color on for two hours and the result would still be light brown.

If your scalp is sensitive when you have your hair colored ask your hair colorist to mix your permanent hair color with 10 volume peroxide instead of 20 volume. (Unfortunately you can not do this if you use a high lifting hair color). You may also rinse with tonic water after rinsing off the color.

If you want to get a better effect using henna, then mix henna with very hot coffee and add some vinegar.

To soften the harshness of white/gray hair, put in highlights/streaks.

To avoid having too many highlights, only highlight the re-growth. This will prevent your hair color from becoming too light. The beauty of highlights is the contrast. Light and dark.

When you buy your hair color at the drug store check the package instructions to see if you are buying a hair color that washes out or a hair color that grows out.

Highlight your hair taking in consideration the shape of your face. For example, have more highlights on top and less on the sides if your face is square or round. If your face is long, then put fewer highlights on top and more down to the nape and on the sides.

Adding highlights using the painting technique. When you paint on your highlights and if you want them to be light you have to remember this technique will not make them really light. The only time it will is if your base color is already quite light, such as light blond.

To cover white roots around the hair line. If you have a lot of white hair you will have found that the roots shows after a period of three weeks in the area of the hair line. Use a coloring stick in the same color, dampen it and apply it on the re-growth around the hair line.

Why a temporary rinse is ineffective on your re-growth. When your roots are growing out and your gray hair is showing you may think that if you could just put a rinse on in between hair coloring it will temporarily cover the gray. One of the reasons why this doesn’t work is because the rinse is very watery and doesn’t stay on the roots. Instead it will go onto the ends where it gets absorbed because this hair is more porous.
