Hi Betty Lilly,

I am sorry this happened to you. You are obviously allergic to the particular brand of hair color your hair stylist used. Since you have gray hair this was probably not the first time you had your hair colored with a permanent type of hair color. A semi-permanent type of hair color will not be able to cover white/gray hair, even though hair coloring manufacturers try to convince us otherwise. Then there is demi-permanent type of hair color which would work because your hair color is dark. It is a cross between a semi-permanent and permanent hair color. However I am not a fan of this type of hair color. Only the black, dark brown and medium brown shades cover white/gray which would be fine in your case but they are kind of lifeless hair colors. Also they are very hard to change colors should you ever want to add a few highlights.

The best thing would be for you to change the brand of the permanent hair color and make a test 24 hours before. Apply a little bit of the different permanent hair color on the inside of your arm and cover it with a band aide. For example, instead of using L’Oreal use Schwarzkopf or Wella. Also I find that permanent hair color from the tube are a little bit more gentle then liquid permanent hair color from the bottle, the pH is a little lower. One last thing, don’t ever have the stylist massage the hair color, not even when rinsing the color off before shampooing. I have seen hair stylist do this. Simply apply it in the re-growth and let it process.

Hi Pam,
Helen Mirren very likely has had highlights added to her gray/white hair which is a great idea if you want to soften this type of hair color. It is flattering for your face and skin while gray/white hair unfortunately is not. This is the big disadvantage of white/gray hair even if the color by itself is beautiful. The color/highlights could have been done with either a permanent hair color in the shade of Very Light Blonde - or it was done with a powder highlighting bleach mixed with 20-or 30 volume peroxide. Helen Mirren is an attractive woman but in my opinion has become even more attractive with her blonde highlights.

What color does Helen put on her hair. I am 61 and love the
Lighter color on her. I think it does have a youthful look.

I wear my short hair blonde. What is your opinion on her lighter blond?
