Why can’t my hair stylist make my hair look like the hairstyle in the picture?
January 7, 2007 on 9:10 pm | In Communicating with your hair stylist | No CommentsYou finally found a picture of a hair style you love and are dying to show it to your hair stylist. You take the picture hoping s/he will be able to do this hair style for you and to your relief yes, it can be done, but …… there may be some challenges. What challenges you ask. Well, we’ll see s/he says.
Your great, creative hair stylist cuts and shapes and styles your hair and voila! Here is your new hair style. Oh, it’s a different style all together. To your disappointment it does not look at all like you envisioned it.
What went wrong? Was your hair stylist incapable, not having the know-how of how to do this hair style? Why didn’t the style come out the same. After all you know you do have great hair so why does your hair not look like the hair in the picture?
Well, here are the challenges that can stand in the way of getting the exact hair style you see in a picture and the reasons why it is not always possible to copy a hair style.
One of the reasons is the shape of your face. For example, the models face is long and yours is round. You see what I mean. Each face shape has different requirements for the hair style to suit you. A round face needs some volume on top while a longish face should have less volume on top.
The shape of the head influences, as you can imagine, the shape of the hair style. Your stylist can compensate for it to a certain degree but only so much. If the shape of your head differs from that of the model’s the style can not look the same. And your hairline which determines the type of forehead you have also needs to be taken into consideration. For example, if the model in the picture has a high forehead and you have a low forehead it will not be possibe to give you the same look as the style in the picture.
Of course the type of hair you have can make all the difference. The person in the picture might have fine hair while yours is very thick. As well your hair could be too straight to achieve that particular hair style. Also the color of the hair is important. The same hair style can look different with black hair than with blond hair.
So, now that I have given you all the reasons why the hairstyle in a picture may not look the same on you, you may be wondering if that means that you shouldn’t ask your hair stylist to copy a hairstyle from a picture
Why it is wise to show a hair style picture to your hair stylist
I still think it’s a good idea to show your hair stylist a hair style picture that you think might look great on you. There are three reasons why I believe that’s still a good idea in spite of the challenges described above.
- One is that since it is very difficult to describe a hairsyle, especially for a layman, you can exactly show what it is you want in a hairstye. The picture will do the describing for you. It’s true. “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
- The scond reason is that even if the end result is not what you expected you still may have found a new look for yourself. That hairstyle picture inadvertently can lead you and your stylist to a new look for yourself and that’s exciting. I know, because it has happened many times for me and my clients and we both came out the winner. For me, besides having the good feeling of making my client happy, it also gives me an opportunity to do something different, and I like that.
- The third reason why I think it’s a good idea to show your hair stylist a hairstyle picture is that it gives your hair stylist a good sense of what you like and s/he therefore has a better idea of how to make you happy. This is at least how I feel about it.
